Jurançon "Marie Kattalin"(Sweet) 2020
Domaine de Souch is located on the first foothills of the Atlantic Pyrenees in the heart of the Bearn – the original homeland of Henry the IV - at an altitude of 332m. The vines are planted on the hillside, facing south and overlooking the Pyrenees and the Pic du Midi d`Ossau. The estate has been under biodynamic management since 1994.
Marie Kattalin is the most powerful cuvée of the estate. This wine is best enjoyed at 12°C to 14°C with local cheese (blue or sheep cheese - ideally from the region!), as an aperitif or with a creamy chicken dish such as a roast chicken & bacon pie, a Bresse Chicken or a slow-cooked leg of lamb. It also makes for the perfect pairing with a classic caramelised Tarte Tatin!
The Petit Manseng grapes come from 3ha of land (of which 2ha are planted in terraces), comprised of a clay and limestone terroir mixed with pudding stones ("Poudingue" in French).
Average age of vines: 40 years old
Vinification: The estate has been certified as biodynamic since 1994. Grapes are hand-harvested around mid-November. They are looking for "Passerillage" in order to increase sugar concentration. Wine is aged in old barrel for 12 months months and then bottled.
Ageing potential: Can be enjoyed young but are perfectly suited for aged (10 to 15 years).
