The Story

Salvador Batlle Barrabeig cultivates 9.5 ha of Catalonian landscape, connected by one focus that decodes terroirs, loves grapes, interprets vines and touches the earth. Spread across Agullana, Capmany, La Vajol, and sites in Rodonyà and the Sierra de Montmell in Baix Penedès where he tends to indigenous varieties from Empordà and Penedès alongside long-established foreign varieties. Each plot sits at varying altitudes between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean Sea.

Salvador farms organically and uses biodynamic practices when necessary, but he prefers to be recognised for his deep respect for the natural environment than to be categorised. Còsmic winemaking is the philosophy of taking care of vines with patience, passion, creativity and freedom. In the cellar, Salvador uses energetic cleansing, Geopathy and sound vibrations to achieve ultimate harmonisation. His winemaking is pure, delicate and fresh in style, creating wines that are connected to the present and underpinned by intentions and values that inspire him.

The People

Salvador

After spending time in New Zealand, Salvador moved to Agullana in 2013, a small town in the centre of the l’Empordà. Originally from a farming background in Rodonyà, in Baix Penedès, Salvador explains that the region of Agullana found him after feeling a deep connection to the land.

An independent, determined and spiritual man, his dream was always to make his own wine in his own style. Salvador’s home sits above his cellar and overlooks a small courtyard filled with mandarin trees and the sounds of the nearby church bells. In 2017 Salvador bought his next-door neighbour’s house - ideally positioned on the side of a hill so that he could extend and create a gravity-fed cellar.

“The name of my cellar is Còsmic - when you are cosmic - you are not the owner of a place; you are part of the place. The balance is when you find the difference between white and black.”

Salvador illustrates the different vineyards that he works with through the artwork on the labels. Those with sacred geometric drawings are wines made from vineyards that were already cultivated and established. The symbols represent the origin of the universe - the flower of life is the symbol of creation. Whereas the wines with colourful hand-painted labels come from the vineyards that Salvador created with his own hands - “a world in a world.” And the names of the wines depict the intentions and values that inspire him, such as Valentía (Courage), Confiança (Confidence), Destí (destiny) and so on.

The Place

Spain, Catalunya

Salvador's vineyards are positioned between 300 and 600 meters above sea level and benefit from warming Mediterranean influence together with cooling influence from the Tramontana wind that blows off the Pyrenees. A useful ally when working organically and biodynamically.

Còsmic's land is spread over two very different Catalan landscapes:

Agullana, Capmany and La Vajol in the Alt Empordà, where Salvador grows local Empordà grape varieties on sandy granite soils and with a particular interest in the study of Carignan - (Cariñena blanca, gris and red).

Rodonyà and the Sierra de Montmell in Baix Penedès, where Salvador cultivates indigenous grape varieties from Penedès and other foreign varieties that are well adapted to the clay and limestone soils.
